The drones, which are capable of triggering 300ft high tsunamis which would wipe coastal cities such as Los Angeles and San Diego, will be transport aboard Russia’s expanded submarine fleet. The Kremlin source said: “Two Poseidon-carrying submarines are expected to enter service with the Northern Fleet and the other two will join the Pacific Fleet. Each of the submarines will carry a maximum of eight drones and, therefore, the total number of Poseidons on combat duty may reach 32 vehicles.”

The special-purpose nuclear-powered submarine Khabarovsk currently being built at the Sevmash Shipyard will become one of the organic carriers of the Poseidon nuclear-capable underwater drone.

The sources said special-purpose submarines and Project 949A nuclear-powered underwater cruisers operational in the Russian Navy may also be used as drone-carriers “after their appropriate upgrade”.

Mr Putin unveiled the Poseidon drone project using his state-of-the-nation address to both houses of Russia’s parliament last year.

He declared the drone “fantastic” and said it could travel through the ocean almost silently at up to 70 knots.

He said the nuclear-powered unmanned underwater vehicles can be armed with either conventional or nuclear warheads and are capable of destroying enemy infrastructural facilities, aircraft carrier groups and other targets.

Poseidon drones, together with their carriers, make part of the so-called oceanic multipurpose system.

A former advisor to Donald Trump has admitted that there are genuine concerns over Russia’s shock plan to deploy the new drone which has been described as a “doomsday device”.

Former State Department senior adviser Christian Whiton said hearing the plans would make any security official “have concerns”.

He admitted that such a blast would create a “wave – and a highly irradiated one”.

But, he told Fox News that it would be “worse to be hit by a multi-megaton nuclear blast than the wave that would be caused by one”.

Mr Whiton explained that water can absorb “a lot of the force” created by such a blast.

Analysts at the Pentagon, which uses the name Kanyon for the drones, claim they are capable of carrying “tens of megatons” of explosive power.
