Samsung Galaxy S9, which is set to launch at the Mobile World Congress tradeshow in less than a fortnight, could be the last entry in the best-selling Galaxy S series.
According to a report by Tekz24, Samsung does not plan to market its next flagship smartphone as the Galaxy S10.
Instead, the South Korean company plans to leave the Galaxy S series and move onto something entirely different.
Samsung has been using its S moniker since 2010, when it launched the original Galaxy S.
With the next entry in the Galaxy S range set to be its tenth, the company will purportedly ditch the Galaxy S10 brand name in favour of Galaxy X – not dissimilar to arch-rival Apple, when it launched the iPhone X last year.
The move is said to be part of a larger re-branding across its smartphone line-up in an effort to remove any confusion amongst consumers.
Rumours of a so-called Galaxy X have been floating around on the internet for months now, however, this primarily centred on an all-new flagship smartphone with a folding OLED display.
The forthcoming flagship smartphone is tipped to ditch the dual-curved, all-glass design that has characterised the latest entries in the Galaxy S series.
Sources say the flexible display will fold inwards like a book, halving the physical footprint of the 7.3-inch phablet.
When the screen is unfurled, Galaxy X owners will be able to use the device as a phone, while unfolded it will function more like a tablet.
Galaxy X is believed to be codenamed “Project Valley” inside Samsung.
It is possible Samsung will use the Galaxy X moniker for the entire range, differentiating between models with a “+” suffix, like it has done with the Galaxy S series.
Tekz24 predicts the line-up could be Galaxy X, Galaxy X Plus, and Galaxy X Foldable.
Meanwhile, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are tipped to be a minor upgrade, with a focus on photography.
“The Camera. Reimagined,” the invitation to the launch event teases, flanked by a large number 9.
The invite confirms the next Samsung Unpacked event will be held on Sunday, February 25th 2018.
Samsung adds: “If a picture is worth a thousand words, the latest member of the Galaxy family has a lot to say.
“On February 25, Samsung Electronics will showcase the next generation of Galaxy devices that reimagines the camera and redefines the way you share your moments.”
