Ms Daniels alleges she had an affair with Trump in 2006. She claimed she was paid $130,000 (£103,990) in hush money. She made the explosive claim just days before the 2016 Presidential election.

In a Tuesday statement Charles J Harder, the President’s legal counsel, said: “The US District Court today ordered Stormy Daniels (real name Stephanie Clifford) to pay President Trump $293,052.33 to reimburse his attorneys’ fees (75 percent of his total legal bill).

“Plus, an additional $1,000 in sanctions to punish Daniels for having filed a meritless lawsuit against the President designed to chill his free speech rights.

“The court’s order, along with the court’s prior order dismissing Stormy Daniels’ defamation case against the President, together constitute a total victory for the President, and a total defeat for Stormy Daniels in this case.”

Trump’s lawyers asked a US court earlier this month for almost $800,000 in legal fees and penalties from Ms Daniels.

Michael Avenatti, Ms Daniel’s lawyer, was quick to highlight the disparity between the amount originally demanded and what Ms Daniels was ordered to pay.

He told Yahoo News: “They received less than one half what they asked for because the request was gross and excessive.”

Mr Avenatti rubbished the claims of a Trump victory, tweeting: “If Stormy has to pay $300k to Trump in the defamation case (which will never hold up on appeal) and Trump has to pay Stormy $1,500,000 in the NDA case (net $1,200,000 to Stormy), how is this a Trump win?”

Following the court ruling, Mr Avenatti said “Harder and Trump deserve each other” and are “both dishonest”.

Ms Daniels alleges she was kept quiet after a purported affair with Trump in 2006 long before he ran for office – something the President strenuously denies.

The adult actor said Trump arranged to pay her $130,000 as part of a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).

NDAs have been embroiled in controversy since they became associated with misuse to cover up sexual misconduct and harassment amid the Harvey Weinstein scandal and ensuing “#MeToo” movement.

In November Ms Daniels claimed Mr Avenatti had filed a defamation lawsuit against Trump without her consent.

She wrote in a statement: “Michael has not treated me with the respect and deference an attorney should show to a client.

“He has spoken on my behalf without my approval.

“He filed a defamation case against Donald Trump against my wishes.

“He repeatedly refused to tell me how my legal defence fund was being spent.”

But despite the spat, Mr Avenatti and Ms Daniels appeared to be on good terms on Tuesday after their early December dispute.
