ONE of Australian cricket’s most exciting prospects has hit a stunning maiden first-class century, while two understrength sides have come in for some heavy treatment.

Victorian youngster Will Pucovski is regarded as one of Australia’s most promising young batsmen — and has shown exactly why he has good judges taking note when he peeled off a classy century against Queensland at the MCG on Sunday.

Pucovski made his first-class debut last summer, but his match ended early when he was struck in the head and suffered a concussion.

He missed three months of cricket as a result of that blow.

VICTORIA V QUEENSLAND

A gritty maiden first-class century from Will Pucovski aided a Victoria fightback during the morning session on day three of the Sheffield Shield match against Queensland.

Pucovski was unbeaten on 121 at lunch, with Victoria 4-254, trailing the Bulls by 198 runs.

It was a second successive fruitful session for the Victorians as 20-year-old Pucovski and veteran Cameron White continued where they left off after batting through Saturday’s final session.

White was eventually out late in the first session on Sunday for an uncharacteristically watchful 62 off 182 balls — the pair added 175 for the fourth wicket, scoring at just 2.50 runs per over.

Queensland’s bowlers struggled for penetration against some resolute batting with Mark Steketee returning the best figures of 2-46 from 24 overs.

Queensland declared at 5-452 on Saturday and the heavy run-scoring at the MCG contrasted with low scores during the second half of the Shield season, after the introduction of the English Dukes ball.

TASMANIA V WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Tasmania have thrashed an inexperienced Western Australia by an innings and 87 runs in their Sheffield Shield match at Bellerive Oval.

Tigers skipper George Bailey lauding his young pace battery after they wrapped up victory before lunch on day three.

The Warriors were dismissed for 277 after they were forced to follow on. Resuming at 5-176 on Sunday morning, WA skipper Ashton Turner launched a counter attack.

But when he edged medium pacer Simon Milenko and was caught behind for 81 thoughts of an unlikely revival evaporated.

Tasmania all-rounder Tom Rogers (3-46) ran through the tail, after taking 4-9 from three overs in WA’s first innings and hitting a valuable 48 with the bat.

“He’s a captain’s dream and always has a real crack. He has a real knack of taking wickets,” Bailey said of the 23-year-old.

Missing eight players to Australia T20 or Test squad duty, the Warriors were skittled for just 67 on day two with the Tigers’ attack near unplayable under overcast Hobart skies.

Bailey praised his attack for sharing the load in the absence of injured spearhead Jackson Bird.

“A lot of the younger ones will take a lot of confidence out of it,” he said.

“Most of the teams will say you need to have depth and can’t rely heavily on one bowler.

“I think they’re starting to have bigger impacts on each and every game.

“The young ones are starting to step up and believe that they can be match winners.”

After being sent in to bat, Tasmania posted 9-431 (dec), headlined by a dogged century from dumped Test wicketkeeper Matthew Wade.

“His innings I thought was very special,” Bailey said.

“He’d been really patient and put in the hard yards and deserved to get three figures.”

The result sent Tasmania top of the Shield table, with the two other round seven matches still to finish.

NEW SOUTH WALES V SOUTH AUSTRALIA

NSW made steady progress early on day three as they seek to build a challenging target in a low-scoring Sheffield Shield match against South Australia at the SCG.

Resuming at 1-61, NSW reached 3-141 at lunch for a lead of 116 runs over the Redbacks.

The Blues’ overnight pair of Daniel Hughes (41) and Ed Cowan (27) took the score to 87, before both fell to Daniel Worrall (2-30) for the addition of three further runs.

Kurtis Patterson (37 not out) and Moises Henriques (16 not out) batted to lunch without any trouble.

SA collected a 25-run lead on the first innings on Saturday, thanks to a defiant 105 not out from Tom Cooper.

NSW are looking to return to the Shield summit after being knocked off top spot for the first time this season, while last-placed SA need a win if they are to have any hope of making a third-successive final.
