In it, the actor will play a contract killer policeman – and it’s his first time treading the boards in the capital since 2007 when he starred in In Celebration.

Killer Joe will be in the main space at the Trafalgar Studios near Trafalgar Square, starting from May 18.

The production is booking up to and including Saturday, August 18; with shows every day of the week except Sundays.

There will also be matinee performances on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Via ATG, tickets range from £15 to £75, with a £3.50 transaction fee.

Bloom said, according to the Evening Standard: “I couldn’t be more excited. It’s a wonderful time to be home and doing such a dynamic, interesting piece of material. I had a fantastic time playing Romeo on Broadway and was craving the opportunity to get back on stage.

“It’s a great way to keep the tools sharp.”

He added of the Tracy Letts piece: “This play is particularly interesting at this time. It’s about the disenfranchised American dream.

“But it’s funky and provocative and visceral. It’s everything I go to the theatre for.”

The 41-year-old is best known for his role as Legolas in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films, and he has also been Will Turner in Pirates of the Caribbean.

More recently he has had an on-off relationship with singer Katy Perry.

Tickets for Killer Joe look set to do extremely well, with Bloom’s fans rushing to snap up seats. His name was trending on Twitter at time of writing, as news of his casting spread.

“My teenage self is very happy with my current self for buying a ticket to see Orlando Bloom in a play (Killer Joe) in the West End,” tweeted one person.

Another wrote that a friend had “got us tickets to see a play with Orlando Bloom in London. You probably don’t know but Orlando Bloom was like my first crush and I always wanted to see him. Aaaaaah!”

The official synopsis reads: “Orlando Bloom (The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit trilogy, the Pirates of the Caribbean series) stars as a cop who moonlights as a killer-for-hire in the multi-award-winning Tracy Letts’ blackly comic thriller, Killer Joe.

“The Smith family hatch a plan to murder their estranged matriarch for her insurance money. They hire Joe Cooper, a police detective and part-time contract killer, to do the job. But once he enters their trailer home and comes face to face with their innocent daughter, the plan spirals out of control…

“A tense, gut-twisting thriller, Killer Joe, directed by Simon Evans (The Dazzle and Bug at Found111, The Best Man) asks where the moral line is drawn in the fight for survival.

“Killer Joe plays a strictly limited 13-week season from Friday 18 May – Saturday 18 August at Trafalgar Studio 1.”
