The Spaniard is wanted by former club Athletic Bilbao with the La Liga side confirming their interest recently.

He is free to negotiate with foreign clubs after entering the final six months of his contract at Manchester United.

Bilbao’s sporting director Rafael Alkorta said earlier this week: “We are interested in Javi Martínez, Ibai, Ander Herrera, [Fernando] Llorente… we’re interested in all of them.

“We still haven’t made progress. We’ll get together on Tuesday to see what can be done.

“I have just returned and this week we will look at our options.”

But with Tuesday now gone, Manchester Evening News claim that Herrera wants to stay at Manchester United.

Herrera has scored 19 goals in 177 appearances for United and has shone since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has taken charge.

The Norwegian is leading on a caretaker basis following the sacking of Jose Mourinho last month.

He has led United to five wins from five ahead of a trip to Tottenham on Sunday (4.30pm).

Manchester United are currently in Dubai on warm weather training having beaten Reading in the FA Cup last weekend.

And coach Mike Phelan has opened up on the mood inside the camp ahead of the Spurs clash.

Phelan told the Man Utd app: “Well it’s a big challenge, but every game at Manchester United is a big challenge because it means you have to express yourself in different ways.

“The players are really looking forward to it, you can tell that from just being around them.

“They understand that this is the stage that they want, they want to play in these huge games and they want to win these huge games.

“They want to be the best players on the football pitch again and we need to encourage that.

“Even though it’s not a cup final, it’s a great occasion being at Wembley, but we need to make sure we perform and have a discipline about us that can get us a strong performance and the result we want.”
