United came into the new campaign off the back of a torrid summer, during which top targets were missed out on and rifts opened between Mourinho and key figures.

The clouds gathering over Old Trafford have not cleared though, with United languishing in 13th having lost two of their opening three games.

Monday night’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham came off the back of a 3-2 reverse against Brighton, piling the pressure on the under-fire Mourinho.

Manchester United legends Ryan Giggs and Bryan Robson have since come out to back Mourinho and call on their old side to pull together.

The Daily Mail claim United are eager to ensure other ex-players still associated with the club do the same.

Their report states United’s paid ambassadors – who include Robson, Andy Cole, Denis Irwin and Ji-Sung Park – have been emailed asking them “to be careful” when speaking to the press.

That action is said to have been taken after United ambassador Dwight Yorke took aim at Mourinho after watching Manchester City march to Premier League glory last season.

“Look on the blue half of Manchester,” Yorke said.

“Don’t tell me those players are so far superior to the players we have.

“We’ve got a very strong attacking line-up.

“The difference is they’ve got a manager who thinks positive and plays attacking football.

“We have a manager who wants to win 1-0 and be defensive.”

Yorke suggested United would have secured the title had City boss Pep Guardiola been in charge of them, adding: “I think they would definitely win the league, because he’s on the front foot.

“He’s playing attacking football.”

The Daily Mail indicate Jose Mourinho was aggrieved by Yorke’s rant in particular due to him still being on United’s payroll.

Speculation is swirling regarding who could replace Mourinho, despite assurances Ed Woodward and co. are not thinking about getting rid of him.

Former Real Madrid gaffer Zinedine Zidane has emerged as a frontrunner for the United job should it become available.

However, ex-Bernabeu president Ramon Calderon has doubts over whether Zidane could adapt to the Premier League.

“Zidane? He’s proven to be a very successful coach too,” Calderon said.

“No other coach has won three Champions League’s in a row.

“I don’t know, they are different leagues, different competitions, different style of playing football.

“The Premier league is completely different to any other league and very different to the Spanish La Liga.”
