Kym Marsh talks about the importance of family, both in and out of Coronation Street

The actress and former pop singer is mum to David, 22, and Emilie, 20, as well as six-year-old Polly, and still enjoys every second of her time with her older two, even though they’re now adults.

“They’re both still at home and not showing any signs of moving out!” Kym laughs.

“I wouldn’t actually want them to go, it would be awful – my house will be so empty once they leave. I’ve said to David, ‘I want you to be one of those weird men who live with their mum until they’re 30!’”

David works as a wall and floor tiler and Emilie, who hopes to make it as a singer one day, is currently working in a beauty salon.

“I’ve always had a very close relationship with them – they’re like my best friends,” Kym says.

“We do a lot of things together. They’ve made brilliant adults, so I’m really proud of them.”

The same, however, can’t be said of Michelle Connor’s relationship with her estranged son Alex (James Burrows).

Ten years ago, Michelle was shocked when 16-year-old Alex unexpectedly turned up on her doorstep.

It emerged that her son Ryan and Alex were accidentally swapped at birth in hospital, making Alex Michelle’s biological son, not Ryan.

After attempting to be a mother to both boys, Michelle eventually told Alex he couldn’t stay forever and the two lost touch.

But Alex (now known as Ali) has reappeared, working as the GP trainee on placement at the local health centre. Michelle has done her best to reconcile with him, but when she is repeatedly rebuffed she sadly decides she needs to try to move on.

After her failed marriage to hapless taxi boss Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson), Michelle is currently planning her wedding to Bistro owner Robert Preston (Tristan Gemmill), but this week she makes the sad decision to remove Ali’s name from her wedding guest list.

“She’s devastated by the fact that he doesn’t want to know,” Kym says.

“She keeps trying to make a breakthrough with him, but he just keeps pushing her away and being horrible to her. In the end, she says, ‘You know what? I’m going to have to give up here. There’s nothing else I can do.’

“She decides not to pursue it any more because it’s hurting her and he has made it quite clear how he feels.”

Down-hearted Michelle confides in her sister-in-law Carla Connor (Alison King), who vows to try to put things right.

Having persuaded Ali to come round to the flat she shares with Roy Cropper (David Neilson), Carla plies him with wine in a bid to get him to change his opinion of Michelle. But she doesn’t get the reaction she’d imagined when he admits he’s always had a crush on her and leans in for a kiss.

“I had a conversation about this with Alison King and we both said, ‘What is wrong with Carla?!’” Kym laughs.

“The way she reacts is not very supportive. They’re very close – they’re like sisters – and she knows how devastated Michelle is and then Carla ends up sleeping with him. It’s the ultimate betrayal. I can’t imagine Michelle is going to take that very well!”

Kym, 41, joined Coronation Street 12 years ago. Having shot to fame in the reality pop group Hear’Say, she went on to have a successful solo career before deciding to switch to acting.

She made her TV acting debut in 2005 in an episode of Doctors and the following year arrived on the cobbles. She has picked up several awards over the years for her impressive performances in some dramatic storylines, none more so than last year, when Michelle suffered the tragic loss of her newborn baby Ruairi.

The storyline mirrored Kym’s own tragic experiences when her baby son, Archie, was born 18 weeks early in 2009 and passed away shortly afterwards.

Last month, Kym organised Archie’s Footprint Ball, to raise funds for the Mariposa Trust, who support bereaved parents and families.

She explains, “My desire to do it stemmed from going through my own personal tragedy – I wanted to turn something awful into something positive. It’s never going to bring my son back and give me what I would really want more than anything in the world, but it’s his legacy. It’s done in his name to help other people that are going through the same sad thing that we went through.”

Kym lives in Manchester with her boyfriend of four years, health and fitness consultant Matt Baker, along with David and Emilie, from a previous relationship, and Polly from her marriage to actor Jamie Lomas.

“My children all get on so well,” Kym beams proudly.

“This morning, David let me have an extra 15 minutes in bed and he got Polly up for school and made her breakfast. Then Emilie came in and cuddled under a blanket with Polly.

“I looked at them and thought, ‘This is so cute.’ They all love each other; David and Emilie are so wonderful with Polly and she absolutely idolises the two of them.”

It certainly sounds like happy families to us. Now if only Kym could pass a little bit of that bliss on to Michelle…
